About this Unit
This unit aims to enable students to sustainably manage soils for landscaping, crop production, broad acre farming or conservation of uncropped areas through giving them an understanding of soil chemistry, biology and physics. These properties also give the soil a unique signature that can be used for forensic purposes. The lecture material covers the principles of soil formation, classification, mapping, chemistry, physics and biology. The emphasis is on the measurement of parameters that are important for land management and forensic science. The practical sessions seek to reinforce the lecture material by giving students experience in each area of soil science.
