About this Unit
Will not be offered in 2005. On successful completion of this unit the student should be able to identify and assess potential health and environmental hazards in the workplace; understand and use routine monitoring techniques for the assessment of chemical and physical hazards; set up statistical procedures for the quality control of monitoring results; assess the effectiveness of control methods currently in use. This unit is designed to introduce the student to the basic concepts and theoretical framework for the evaluation of the occupational environment for chemical, physical, biological and ergonomic hazards. Topics covered will include monitoring for chemicals, in particular dusts, gases and vapours; assessment of material safety data sheets, analysis of monitoring samples, heat stress monitoring, ionising and non ionising radiation and ergonomic assessment.
