About this Unit
This unit involves the preparation of a map base and data base for planning. It does not involve planning per se. The aim is to subdivide a landscape into natural use regions and describe the mapped attributes of each region (e.g. landform, soil, vegetation, land tenure, land use), as if creating a base map and geographic information system for land use planning. More specific aims are (1) to produce one single map of environmental areas or precincts such that each area is more or less homogeneous in its use possibilities and different from adjacent areas; (2) to classify and tabulate area/precinct data; and (3) to produce a brief written report on the work done and graphic and oral presentations. The intended outcome is that students will be able to produce a base map and related data base for land use planning as in the preparation of an 'environmental plan' or 'plan of management'.
