About this Unit
The overall aim of this unit is to demonstrate how basic biochemical knowledge and principles are relevant to an understanding of a range of applied sciences, including food science, nutrition,, health, horticulture and the biological sciences in general. The major themes of the unit include the structure, nature and properties of important classes of biologically important molecules, and the metabolism of food by living systems: plants, animals and bacteria. The emphasis will be on protein structure/function and their role in metabolism. Students will also have a basic understanding of carbohydrate metabolism, glycolysis, electron transport and oxidative phosphorylation.
