About this Unit
This unit has been replaced by 101189 - Introduction to Logical Thinking. This unit introduces students majoring in psychology to the formal rules of argument including syllogistic reasoning. Students are equipped with an understanding of how Science proceeds, how scientific thought differs from other knowledge systems, and how scientific argument is structured in the pursuit of facts. Through a structured series of exercises students come to understand the differences between inductive and deductive reasoning, the premises from which they start, how such reasoning is to be assessed for validity and truth claims and how to analyse the strength of conclusions.
