About this Unit
This unit has been replaced by 101188 - Genetics and Bioscience for Psychologists. This unit follows on from Biology for Psychologists and provides a more thorough grounding in the genetics and biochemistry of homo sapiens. The course is laboratory-based and focuses on the structure, function and synthesis of proteins including: amino acids, protein structure, enzymatic functions, the structure of DNA and mRNA, chromosomes and genes. Processes of genetic control of metabolism are emphasised via the transcription and translation of genetic information. The role of amino acid sequences in the control of a number of genetic illnesses is emphasised and recent advances in somatic and germ-line genetic engineering considered.
