About this Unit
This unit covers various areas of modern environmental toxicology. It gives a balanced view of old and new knowledge of toxicology, highlighting the various fashionable trends that appear and disappear with new discoveries. The unit thus examines the environmental effects and health risks associated with the use and presence of metal toxins, neurotoxic metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and phenols. Specific considerations include effects of chronic exposure to potentially carcinogenic species, toxicology and metabolism of toxic species, molecular and genotoxic effects, health effects of urban air pollution, role of toxic substances in the development of diseases in aquatic organisms, toxic substances in occupational environments and potential hazards to workers, techniques for assessing health effects of pollutants and the problem of environmental risk assessment.
