About this Unit
This unit examines the extent to which the philosophical foundations of the concept of human rights lies in the liberal democratic tradition of Western Europe. It contains an historical review of international measures for the protection of human rights and how international law came to be concerned with the rights of individuals. Special attention is given to key international human rights instruments such as The Charter of the United Nations and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. It examines the extent to which international human rights have been incorporated into Australian domestic law or given effect through principles of statutory interpretation in Australia.
