About this Unit
In 2008 this unit replaced by 101467 - Islam in Southeast Asia. Islam is a significant factor in world politics and an important political and social factor in many Asian countries. The unit looks at the role of Islam in the political sphere in the global context and in a number of Asian countries, including some that are Australia's near neighbours such as Indonesia, the Philippines, China and Malaysia. Major themes to be explored include: the relationship between Islam and politics, the question of the Islamic state, Islam and feminism, the diversity of Islamic societies, Western representations of Islam, and the apparent friction between the Islamic and Western worlds.
