In 2007 this unit replaced by 101365 - Group Interaction. What is a group? This unit looks at a group and its social context; properties of groups that affect communication; power versus affiliation perspectives on groups; a construction-of-meaning view of group communication; influence of groups on members and members on groups; conflict and consensus in groups; conflict resolution; leadership within groups; evaluation of group communication outcomes. How do we make effective groups? What can social psychology and communications research tell us about the sense of belonging, good leadership, good decision-making, high productivity and positive relations with other groups? This unit covers important ideas about groups and some practical skills.
