How can the problems associated with urbanization be addressed? This unit develops a geographic perspective on urbanization and introduces the interdisciplinary field of urban studies through the examination of: The phenomena of urbanism and urbanization and their social consequences; The spatial distribution of human settlements and their relationship to social and political structures; The spatial structure of cities with respect to land-use, class, gender, ethnicity and culture; Urban landscapes and images, place-making and spatial behaviour; Movement within cities, migration, transport and access; Conflict within cities, politics, crime and warfare; Urban futures, policy and planning.
