Unit Enrolment Restrictions
The law honours programme is an embedded honours programme, exclusive to law courses of the Western Sydney University. Students must be enrolled in course 2501 Bachelor of Law (Graduate Entry), 2502 Bachelor of Law (Non-graduate Entry) or a Western Sydney University combined law degree to be eligible to undertake this unit; and students must have the School Honours Coordinator's approval to enrol in the unit, as part of the Law Honours programme. See eligibility criteria stipulated in the School of Law Honours Award Level Guidelines for the proposed year/ session of entry. In summary students are required to have successfully completed 160 credit points (or 140 if also taking units in summer session) of LLB core and/or alternate units and have a reasonable prospect of completing their course with a GPA of 5.5 or greater in all law units.
Special requirements would depend on research topic and would be assessed on a case by case basis.
About this Unit
This yearlong unit may be commenced in either Autumn or Spring semester and lasts the equivalent of two consecutive semesters (excluding Summer Semester). The unit comprises the research and writing of a research dissertation of between 8,000 and 10,000 words on an approved topic in law. The unit provides an opportunity for law students to further develop and refine their legal research and writing skills and to explore and analyse a legal topic chosen in consultation with the School of Law Honours Coordinator, in order to produce a high quality piece of academic work. It includes training in research methodology, and support activities including presenting at an honours research seminar and requires the student to undertake a literature review followed by submission of a research proposal, upon acceptance of which the dissertation is written under supervision.
