About this Unit
This unit covers the current and changing role and responsibilities of managers of early childhood services in NSW and Australia. An ecological framework is provided where the evolving role of early childhood management is examined within its historical, political, social and economic context. Within this theoretical framework, students research, analyse and participate in simulated and real management problem-solving. Strategies for dealing with the technical, human, educational and symbolic/cultural dimensions of early childhood management are presented and analysed in light of current and predicted trends in early childhood education. Emphasis is placed on staffing aspects, including procedures for supervision, goal setting, staff development, staff appraisal, organisational climate, job satisfaction, and team building. In the practical component, students work in teams for problem-solving and other activities.
