About this Unit
This unit provides students with a range of basic skills in mathematics and statistics, which are useful in the finance industry. After reviewing basic methods of algebra, functions and their uses are discussed. The mathematics of finance is covered in some depth, including interest, present and future values, annuities, periodic payments, discounted cash flows, depreciation, bonds and debentures. The uses and abuses of statistics are discussed by looking at ways of presenting data, both in tables and pictorially. Summary statistics, probability, decision making, correlation, simple linear regression and index numbers are introduced. The use of a financial calculator and spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel) to perform financial and statistical calculations
are emphasised.
