About this Unit
The explosive growth in using information technology (IT) in private and public sector organisations over the last decade has introduced significant and fundamental changes to the structure and culture of these corporations. In some organisations, such as banks or insurance companies, IT and the data provided, forms the most important resource used by those organisations. In line with these changes, this unit introduces students to the role IT plays in the operation of the contemporary corporation, including an understanding of how IT can be used to identify and capitalise on business opportunities, to support managerial decision-making at all levels of the organisation, and to change the corporate culture of the organisation. Students will understand why a variety of different systems exist within an organisation, from large mainframe-based transaction processing systems to small microcomputer (PC) based end-user systems. They will understand how these systems are developed, implemented and subsequently maintained. Students become familiar with concepts such as system and data ownership, security and protection of the information system resource and with legal, human, ethical and privacy issues as they relate to information technology and its use. Students become competent in applying microcomputer software such as word processing, spreadsheet and database software to assist in solving managerial and other business problems and presenting their solutions.
