Content includes studies of English hegemony; kings and queens; nobles and gentry; commons and plebs; parliaments; regions and localities; landscape; media, communications and ideas; work, class and gender; migration and mobility; sexual mores; riot, rebellion and revolution; popular and elite culture; attitudes to death; crime and criminal law; religion; the state and constitution; public opinion and civil society; demographic and economic development; education and schooling; family and community; nationalism and the emergence of 'Great Britain'.
