Assumed Knowledge
Competence in various forms of communication, such as written, visual, or media-based, to underpin the preparation of a final report. The students need to be at third-year level, adept at working with others and capable of carrying out project work independently.


About this Unit
In 2012 this unit replaced by 101874 - Experiential Learning in Communities (ELC). Learning through Community Service is a 20 credit point unit in which students apply discipline-based knowledge as they carry out projects of substantial benefit to community agencies. The unit will run over a 6-month period (1H or 2H) and will include common symposium sessions, a 10-week placement in a community agency, an on-line learning system for student/team support, and a final report to the agency. A selection of the following cohorts will run each semester - Australian Stories; Communication Projects for Sustainable Development; Each One Assist One; International Service Learning; MMADD about the arts: Music, Media Arts, Dance and Drama in the Primary School; Languages in Community & Educational Settings; Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), Reaching out to the Spanish Community.
