About this Unit
This unit aims to introduce students to a series of problems surrounding questions of the manipulation of images and page design as a means of communication. The unit begins by considering design as an art form, studying the work of 20th century artists working with photo-montage, poster, magazine, book design, and propaganda. The strategies of these artists and their orientation in relation to their implied audience will be considered, as will ethical and technical theoretical problems concerning the impact of the visual juxtaposition of images and image and text. The unit will consider contemporary ethical issues surrounding digital image manipulation. This unit has a significant practical component. Students develop and practice the skills of desktop publishing using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Pagemaker. Students are encouraged to think through design, ethical and political issues relating to the juxtaposition of text and image by creating text/image desktop publishing projects.
