About this Unit
Beyond explicit violence, the colonisation of Australia meant the intrusion of governmental and institutional oversight into nearly every aspect of the lives of indigenous Australians. Dangerous Visions considers the complex history of the control of images of, and the control of images for, indigenous Australians. This unit explores the significance of the coincidence of the development of modern imaging technologies, such as film and photography, with the development of the modern state and its policies and controls for racialised subject groups such as indigenous peoples. This unit explores the 'dangers' posed by uncontrolled representations of indigenous peoples to the colonisers charged with their control and 'protection'.
