This unit is concerned with Asian nationalism as a force in its own right, as well as a phenomenon to be explained, an its links with state building in recent times. It explores an array of issues, including ethnicity, national identity, race relations, nation-state tensions and national integration. And it involves case studies of china, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia, in a comparative fashion, providing valuable insights into some important aspects of modern and contemporary Asia.
