About this Unit
This unit looks at the far-reaching changes underway in Indonesia, Australia's closest and perhaps most important Asian neighbour. It examines the overthrow in 1998 of the 30-year authoritarian regime of President Soeharto and the ensuing contemporary struggle for power and reform. The unit sets these contemporary political developments in the historical context of post-independence Indonesian politics, both domestic and international. It traces the origins of Indonesia's polity to formative historical experiences, notably the struggle for independence, the Japanese occupation during WWII, and the Dutch colonialism. It also looks to deeper cultural and political influences to provide understanding of contemporary Indonesian politics.
