About this Unit
Recent cultural and technological changes demand a re-conceptualising of the design body and its representation. Matters of the body are frequently oversimplified as God-given or natural. This unit sets out to explore the complex entities called bodies from two points of view that involve designers: the design of the 'living body' and designing 'the body as a subject in representation' in order to understand their relationship of mutual effect. This unit looks at the design and styling of the body as an activity directed towards the construction of a certain kind of 'self' with identities, a lifestyle, a gender, a sex, a sexuality, an image and a social status.
