About this Unit
This unit focuses on the theory and practice of Sergei Eisenstein. The continued influence of Eisensteinian technique is observable in the fast-cutting techniques of TV advertisements, video clips and action films, so that any consideration of Eisenstein's work is of central relevance in approaching contemporary practices in film and video. This unit familiarises students with the possibilities of Eisenstein's 'imaginary cinema' as well as working closely with his theories of film - in particular, the cinema of attractions, 'film sense', primitive cinema, ecstasy and 'cinematism'. The unit considers Eisenstein's importance not only for cinema but for aesthetics more generally.
