About this Unit
This unit utilises a problem-based learning approach to explore assessment, management and measurement of change in complex cases of communication and mealtime disorder in children. Authentic case scenarios of paediatric clients will encourage students to integrate theoretical knowledge, clinical reasoning, and practical speech pathology skills to plan and evaluate approaches to working with children, their families and the communities in which they live. Individual, targeted and universal intervention strategies will be addressed within the context of collaborative, family centred philosophy.
Special Requirements - Essential Equipment
Students must purchase a Speech Pathology uniform and badge which will be worn in all simulation activities (teaching and assessment).
Students will be expected to have collated, for themselves, a clinical assessment and treatment toolkit which will include the following items necessary to conduct Speech Pathology service with a paediatric client:
• Plastic container with lid in which to keep equipment
• Small penlight torch (or similar)
• Small bottle of hand sanitizer
• Simple stopwatch
• A box of individually wrapped tongue depressors
• Pairs of Nitrile gloves
• A pen and note pad
• Motivating reinforcement items for children e.g. stickers, inexpensive toys/games
• Packet of tissues
• Packet of wet wipes
