About this Unit
This unit introduces a range of theoretical approaches of which performance is situated. Central issues and analytical ideas are related to current creative practice; this unit requires students to attend specific performances. These shared experiences as audience members create a foundation for interrogating the relationship between social theory and practice.
Developments in the performing arts can be paralleled in the developments of society as a whole. These include issues of language, European and American cultural imperialism, indigenous Aboriginal culture, post-colonialism and representations of the ‘Australian’ character. A broad understanding of politics, culturalism, gender, class and economics helps students understand changes in performance forms and styles, also due to the influences of nationalism, multi-culturalism, internationalism and the introduction of technologies such as film, radio, television and the world wide web.
