The Masters in Cardiac Sonography integrates online and on-campus learning activities with students’ employed sonography practice. It enables students to develop the theoretical, practical and professional skills, together with the research proficiency required for the advanced practice of cardiac sonography.

This course is an Australian Sonographers Accreditation Registry (ASAR) approved graduate entry training program in cardiac sonography (echocardiography).

Admission

There are two admission pathways

Applicants without a cardiac sonography qualification

Applicants must have successfully completed an undergraduate degree in natural and physical sciences or health. Applicants with an undergraduate degree in another discipline will be considered for admission if they can demonstrate greater than 12 months full-time work experience in medical imaging (which must be supported with a statement of service for all work experience listed)

Applications (from Australian citizens and holders of permanent resident visas) must be made via the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC). Those who have undertaken studies overseas must provide proof of proficiency in English.

Applicants require a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 5.0 or greater in their sonography qualification, and must submit a written expression of interest in the research component (final 3 units) of the Masters of Cardiac Sonography.

Applicants must secure a trainee cardiac sonography position (with a minimum of three days imaging per week) for the duration of the course. Written verification must be provided to the university by commencement of the course.

Applicants with an Australian Sonographers Accreditation Registry recognised cardiac sonography qualification

Applications (from Australian citizens and holders of permanent resident visas) must be made via the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).

Applicants with cardiac sonography qualifications from universities other than Western Sydney University, may apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL) for 60 (50%) of the 120 credit points needed to successfully complete the course. Students granted RPL of 60 credit points must complete Principles of Cardiac Sonography 3 and Principles of Cardiac Sonography 4, before undertaking Advanced Principles and Practice of Cardiac Sonography, Introduction to Biostatistics and the Research Project in Cardiac Sonography units.

Applicants with cardiac sonography qualifications from Western Sydney University may apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL) for 80 (66%) of the 120 credit points needed to successfully complete the course. Students granted RPL for 80 credit points must complete Advanced Principles and Practice of Cardiac Sonography and Introduction to Biostatistics before commencing the Research Project in Cardiac Sonography.

Applicants must hold a cardiac sonography position (with a minimum of three days imaging per week) for the duration of the course. Written verification must be provided to the university by commencement of the course.

Overseas qualifications must be deemed by the Australian Education International - National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (AEI-NOOSR) to be equivalent to Australian qualifications in order to be considered by UAC and Western Sydney University.
