The Master of Building Surveying is a three-year part-time program which aims to provide students with specialist knowledge and skills to assess and evaluate building solutions. It is relevant to professionals certifying performance solutions under the National Construction Code and relevant Standards. The program enables students to understand performance requirements, fire safety and engineering principles, accessibility and sustainability and other issues related to building surveying practice. Graduates will also acquire the skill to independently appraise the literature and conduct research to address building surveying contemporary issues faced by the building industry.

The program has been designed primarily for External delivery. Many of the units have non-compulsory online workshops and students are encouraged to attend these workshops to gain the benefit of interaction within the degree. Students are offered the opportunity to attend workshops online and face to face. Students without relevant work experience will be required to undertake such experience in the second year of the program.

Study Mode
3 years part-time. Students can fast-track by completing additional units per semester to complete the course in as early as two years.

Accreditation
The course has full accreditation with the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors (AIBS). The course is recognised by NSW Fair Trading to meet the qualifications requirement to be accredited as Building surveyor-unrestricted.

Admission

There are two entry pathways into the Master of Building Surveying:

A3051 - Entry Pathway A (120 credit points)

Applicants must have successfully completed an undergraduate degree or higher in building surveying, engineering, or construction management (honours)

AND

a minimum of 2 years full-time equivalent professional work experience as an accredited building surveyor

A3052 - Entry Pathway B (160 credit points)

Applicants must have successfully completed an undergraduate degree or higher in building surveying, construction management or construction management (honours), civil engineering, construction technology, housing, quantity surveying, planning, architecture, project management (construction) or bushfire protection.

Applications from Australian and New Zealand citizens and holders of permanent resident visas must be made via the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC). Use the links below to apply via UAC or Western Sydney University. Applications made directly to Western Sydney do not have an application fee.

Applicants who have undertaken studies overseas may have to provide proof of proficiency in English. Local and International applicants who are applying through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) will find details of minimum English proficiency requirements and acceptable proof on the UAC website. Local applicants applying directly to the University should also use the information provided on the UAC website.

Overseas qualifications must be deemed by the Australian Education International - National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (AEI-NOOSR) to be equivalent to Australian qualifications in order to be considered by UAC and Western Sydney University.

Work Integrated Learning

As a requirement of the regulator and industry, work-based training, placement and experience is now required and can be undertaken in conjunction with a research project (40cps). In many cases students are already working and engaged in the industry. A dedicated Unit Coordinator oversees students learning process while working in the industry. Structured reporting will be used to understand the details of the work experience and evaluate students’ learning.Please contact the Course Advisor listed above for information.

The course length and structure varies based on the student’s previous study background and level, and work experience.

Students are categorised into two Pathways based on their previous study background and work experience as indicated below and course structure and length is set accordingly. See individual links for detailed course structure.

Pathway A (120 credit points)

Students who have been admitted with an undergraduate degree or higher in building surveying, engineering, or construction management (honours) AND a minimum of 2 years full-time equivalent professional work experience as an accredited building surveyor are eligible to complete the 120 credit point Pathway below.

A3051Master of Building Surveying Entry Pathway A (120 credit points)

Pathway B (160 credit points)

Students who have been admitted with an undergraduate degree or higher in building surveying, construction management or construction management (honours), civil engineering, construction technology, housing, quantity surveying, planning, architecture, project management (construction) or bushfire protection. are eligible to complete the 160 credit point Pathway below.
