About this Unit
This unit provides an introduction the work of Sigmund Freud by examining central concepts and methodologies within Freudian theory. Particular attention is paid to key terms such as the unconscious and repression, as well as to the early case histories and Freud's structural models of the mind (especially the ego, id, and superego). Although providing a general introduction to Freud's work, the focus is on Freud's early writings and the beginnings of psychoanalysis, in particular the texts on hysteria and The Interpretation of Dreams. Emphasis is given also to the historical and cultural contexts within which psychoanalysis arose.
