About this Unit
At an introductory level, this unit exposes students to environmental, economic and social dimensions of the effects of urban development of metropolitan centres and their impacts on the natural environment. It examines the relationship between urbanisation, development and environmental degradation. The principles of sustainable development are critically examined. The relationship between the physical aspects of urban form, economic efficiency and social aspects of city life such as equity, quality of life and cultural identity of regions are investigated. In view of the local and global dimensions of the environmental impacts of metropolitan regions, this unit maintains both local as well as international focus.
