About this Unit
Civil construction and site development involves the development of the infrastructure which enables building development. In housing subdivisions it includes bulk excavation, roads and retaining walls, site drainage, as well as water, sewerage, electricity and gas supply mains. This is of critical importance because up to a third of the total construction cost is buried in the ground. The percentage is even greater for large public civil works such as bridges, tunnels, highways and ports. Substructure work connects buildings to the ground and includes footings, piling and slabs. Students will learn to identify problem sites including rock, chemically aggressive soils, water-logged sites and unstable filled areas.

Special Requirements - Essential Equipment
This unit involves extensive practical exercises. In order to undertake the practicals, each student must have the appropriate PPE (Personal Protection Equipment): Laboratory coat Broad-brimmed hat Safety shoes
