About this Unit
Part A Statics deals with the action of forces, moments and couples in two and three dimensions on machine elements and simple structures. It examines the equilibrium of single bodies, of multi-body structures and of mechanisms, and provides a systematic approach to solving practical engineering problems in statics based on the free-body-diagram. The methods studied make extensive use of vector algebra in the analysis. Part B Materials involves the study of the properties of metals, non-metals and alloys - investigating phase diagrams, heat treatments, and microstructure. It also covers aspects of manufacturing processes that impact on the properties of materials.
