About this Unit
A theoretical and practical investigation of a real engineering or physics topic. This unit is to be combined with the unit Major Investigation and Report 2. The project is individual to each student. A list of approved projects is produced annually from which students may select a topic and a project supervisor. The project is a major study of a topic in which students work on their own under the supervision of a project supervisor. Each project topic contains major elements of theory and practice including field and experimental work where appropriate. In addition to carrying out the work, students are required to produce a major report and to present a seminar on the work done. Both of these are assessed as exercises in communication. Students are provided with advice and guidelines but the project is intended as an exercise in self-discipline and organisation, in addition to the engineering or physics and academic aspects. Students are expected, wherever possible, to cooperate with industry, working on real engineering problems but still under the overall supervision of an academic supervisor. Where appropriate, students are required to enter into a contract between themselves and the university and, if appropriate, the sponsoring industry. The contract will lay down the expected rate of progress and the frequency and mechanisms of contact between the student and the supervisors.
