About this Unit
From 2005, this unit replaced by 300461 - Engineering and Industrial Design Practice, and from 2009 by 300674 - Engineering, Design and Construction Practice. This unit introduces students to the professions of engineering and its disciplines, design and physics. Drawing on projects undertaken by students, the relevance of the other first session core units, Engineering Mathematics 1, Engineering Physics and Computing for Engineers are explored. Graduate attributes identified by the Institution of Engineers, Australia and the university are developed in the context of engineering, design and physics investigations. Topics included are: communication with professionals and the community; problem identification, formulation and solution in project management; understanding of how to work as an individual in a multidisciplinary and multi-cultural team; understanding the social, cultural, global, and environmental responsibilities of engineering, design and physics; understanding the need for sustainable development, and principles of sustainable development and design; developing the capacity to undertake lifelong learning, including the ability to identify information needs and gather relevant information.
