About this UnitThis unit examines cultural forms and practices as they relate to sex and sexual activity. Its primary focus is sociological and ethnographic. The unit introduces students to methods and approaches in the researching of sex's role in cultural formation. We look at the way in which sex, sexual practice and sexual identity are experienced as social and cultural practices. The unit looks closely at particular sexual cultures, and moves from research regarding these sexual cultures to understandings of sex as culture. Each topic takes a trajectory from empirical, qualitative or other sociological studies of sites and practices, drawing on a range of theoretical approaches to develop understandings of sex as culture.
