About this Unit
From 2009 this unit is being replaced by 300644 - Biophysics. This unit introduces students to the application of physics and engineering principles to biology. Artificial and cellular membranes are studied in theory and in the laboratory, with emphasis on membrane pumps and channels. Laboratory classes include the study of membrane transport processes using radioisotopes. Students are trained in the principles and use of the electron microscope. There is a visit to a factory manufacturing cochlear implants or other biophysical devices.
