About this UnitIn 2016 this unit replaced by 102386 - Sustainability, Tourism and Place. This unit examines the scope and features of outdoor recreation and leisure in protected areas as well as in rural, urban, and regional settings. It focuses on the sustainability of recreational and leisure activities from the perspectives of natural resource managers, visitors/tourists, host community, tourism industry, and relevant government authorities. Students will assess the management of a recreational and leisure activity (passive or active) in an outdoor setting in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. The role of leisure and recreation in natural and built tourist destinations in enhancing the socio-economic wellbeing of the host community, in ensuring the maintenance of environmental integrity, and in dealing with current issues at the local, national, and international levels will be explored.
