About this Unit
This unit focuses on the brief of the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts and its subsidiaries, the Australian Broadcasting Authority, the Australian Communications Authority and the Australia Council. It addresses the role played by state government initiatives in communications and media arts policy. It takes a case study approach to the development of communications policy in Australia (for example, the 'cash for comment' inquiry of 1999/2000, the HDTV licensing decisions; the auctioning of data-casting). The unit explores the theorisation of the relationship between telecommunications policy, globalisation and theories of the nation state.
