The sub-major in English Linguistics is available for Bachelor of Arts students. It consists of 40 credit points which count towards the Languages Key Program. The sub-major introduces students to significant fields of linguistic knowledge about English, including an overview of the historical development of the English language from pre-Norman Old English to the World Englishes of today; an analysis of the structure, including the morphology, grammar, syntax and phonology of the current standard variety of English; an introduction to how meaning is made both at the word and discourse level in English through the fields of Semantics and Pragmatics; and an examination of a range of theories about language, with reference to English, as naturally occurring spoken discourse or written text determined by its context of use. These theories include ethnography, variation theory, interactional analysis, theories of politeness and face, conversational analysis, register theory and critical discourse analysis.
